Biography

The San Francisco artist, John Salisbury, was born and raised in rural central Michigan. During his high school years he developed a surprising interest in drawing and sketching landscapes and figures. After high school graduation he migrated to Northern California, where he studied and graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. In the mid 1960's he spent two years in the Peace Corps, working as an ethnologist for the Nigerian Federal Department of Antiquities. His travels in western Africa at that time had a major effect in stimulating his art. His subsequent travels through the Middle East and Europe alos led to a fascination with the anthropology and archeology of those areas.

After returning to California, John pursued his interest in landscape and figurative depiction while frequently backpacking in the mountains and deserts of the southwestern states, Mexico and South America. More recently he has toured Thailand, Laos and the visually spectacular Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Much of his current art is derived from those experiences.
